The story behind the image
Let’s start this week by dreaming of a warm and sunny place, which is always nice during the European winter.
In 2005, we spent two weeks on the island of Tenerife. Our hotel was directly situated at the coastline, close to a tiny harbour, and you could easily access the sea from the hotel. It even had a small private beach with the black sand that is typical for Tenerife, which is a vulcanic island. A small paved trail invited for short walks along the seaside.
Right next to our hotel was this apartment building with holiday homes. It looked fabulous, and while our hotel was very nice, too, I secretly admired the folks who could afford a holiday apartment here.
In March 2024, it was a genuine hotel, the Santa Barbara Golf and Ocean Club, belonging to the Diamond Resorts group. Looking at recent satellite images, it seems that the pool area has been redesigned in recent years. The curvy pool landscape has been replaced with a very large pool consisting of two wide rectangles that cross each other, probably to better serve swimmers and to provide more space for sunchairs.
