The story behind the image

Eutin in Germany is a beautiful town situated in Northern Germany, between the cities of Kiel and Lübeck. It has a long history, and it is well worth a visit. Its stunning castle and gardens are located right next to the Kellersee.

This postcard image was shot by Hans Julius Simonsen around 1950. It shows the western side of the castle with the small bridge that leads into the inner courtyard. Back then, the walls were covered by ivy, the scrub next to the walls was pretty dense, and the trees in the back were huge. Today, ivy and scrub have gone, a move that has changed the look of the building. The coziness of the castle has been replaced by a more monumental appearance, which is still appealing but quite different.

Photographer Hans Julius Simonsen was born in 1907 in Oldenburg (Holstein) in Germany as a son of photographer Julius Simonsen. In 1933, at the age of 25, Hans Julius joined his father’s business and ran the business for several decades. Like his father, he captured all the beautiful spots in Germany and sold the images as postcards under the label Kunstverlag Julius Simonsen. In 1957, the publishing and postcard operations were stopped, leaving just the photo studio in Oldenburg and the printing business in Lensahn.

Here are similar shots from 1932 and 1942.
