The story behind the image
My grandparents spent six weeks in the summer of 1943 in Sankt-Peter-Ording, a quiet little village at the North Sea coast of Germany. This enabled them to get away from the increasingly difficult situation in Kiel. The city had seen frequent air raids and they simply wanted to get the kids out of the city.
Life in Sankt-Peter was completely different, despite being “just” 120 kilometers away from Kiel. This photo shows Edith and Inga (my mother, who had just celebrated her first birthday by then), almost blending in with the natural dunes. The pier in the back is the bridge that leads to the sandbank.
Their time-out from the terrible war was welcome, and the family could forget about their worries for a while and Edith could even smile for the photographer. At the age of 37, Edith was looking good and relaxed.
