The story behind the image
With the upcoming European soccer championship, I thought it might be worthwhile to pull out an image of soccer fans.
The summer of 2006 was dominated (at least in Germany) by the soccer world championship. What’s more, the German soccer league ended the 2005/2006 season early, and – like so many times before – the winner was FC Bayern München. That year they won the DFB Cup as well. This ‘double’ was another big achievement.
The fans were driving from the Allianz Arena in one giant queue of cars all the way down to the city center, where they celebrated their team until deep in the night.
I especially like this image as it shows the pure joy of the supporters.
However, the dream of winning the woorld championship did not come true that summer. Still, I think it’s fair to say that the summer of 2006 had been an exciting period in Germany, and these fans perfectly express this mood. Awesome.
