The story behind the image
Lake Garda in Italy is just a four-hour drive from our home in Munich, Germany, (on good days) but thanks to its true Italian flair it is a complete change to daily life in Germany.
In June 2001 we stayed for a couple of nights in Riva del Garda at the northern tip of the lake. The old town has a small harbor where you can book scheduled services as well as individual cruises on the lake. We booked a round trip to Malcesine, so we could avoid looking for a parking lot in Malcesine and enjoy the maritime flair instead.
After the visit to the historic town we waited for the passenger ferry to take us back to Riva, and I captured the arrival of the Italia, a paddle steamer with a long history. Put into service in 1909, it was used as a hospital ship in WW2, it sunk in January 1945 and was raised in 1949. In the 1970s it got modern Diesel engines. (Read more about the vessel here and here.)
The weather on that day was nice and warm, but quite hazy. When used “as is”, the image on the color negative film did not reflect the beauty of the place. This changed when I transformed it to black and white, which turned it into an almost timeless photo, that could have been captured in 1910.
