The story behind the image

Eutin in Germany is a beautiful town situated in Northern Germany, between the cities of Kiel and Lübeck. It has a long history, and it is well worth a visit. Its stunning castle and gardens are located right next to the Kellersee.

This photo was probably one of the late works of Albert Giesler, shot around 1932. It shows the western side of the castle with the small bridge that leads into the inner courtyard. Back then, the walls were covered by ivy, the scrub next to the walls was pretty dense, and the trees in the back were huge. Today, ivy and scrub have gone, a move that has changed the look of the building. Gone is the coziness captured by Giesler. It has been replaced by a more monumental appearance, which is quite different but still appealing.

Alb. Giesler, official photographer of the court Oldenburg since the 1892, died on 27th October 1932 in his hometown Eutin at the age of 70 years from a heart stroke. His work will continue to live in the archives forever.
