The story behind the image
Here’s another photo of Lisbon in Portugal. We took a taxi from our hotel in the city center to Belém to visit the Torre de Belém, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the Jardim da Praça do Império and the Jardim Vasco da Gama. Next to this park were historic houses that looked quite run-down: beautiful, old, and in a bad condition. I liked the fact that they were inhabitated, the clothes on the line were a clear sign. I wanted to capture the contrast of the beautiful manicured greens and the old houses.
Looking at the place today shows an entirely picture: The old buildings are still there, but have been beautifully restored (a closer look reveals that the paint seems to be falling off again, though.) Several restaurants serve their food on the patios outside.
Personally, I think it is good that the old buildings could be preserved. There certainly was a huge temptation to replace them with yet another faceless appartment block.
