The story behind the image
I have been able to obtain yet another beautiful cabinet photo of the Kleiner Ugleisee (lit. ‘small Lake Uglei’) near Plön in Germany, shot by photo pioneer Albert Giesler. This print is dated 1890 in the lower right corner and it is in a good condition, compared to other prints of that period.
I think it is remarkable that this place exists almost unchanged today. The only remarkable change is the name: it’s called Kleiner Ukleisee today (spelled with a ‘k’) today. But it is still a place for getting carried away by dreams.
I scanned the print at 2400 dpi which results in a giant 122 megapixel image. It’s amazing to see the details of the photograph when using a zoom level of 100% in Photoshop, especially considering that the print is 133 years old at the time of writing.
If you like the lake as much as I do, here is another shot of the lake from 1894.
