The story behind the image
I found this photo in the family archive, taken on New Years Eve 1952 between Mittenwald and Garmisch in Germany. Apparently, there had been heavy snow on that day, and the couple had stopped their Volkswagen Beetle next to the road to take this photo.
The amazing thing about this photo is that they could stop the car like this. There must have been very little traffic, and if a driver wanted to pass the parked car, he would just do it. Today, this would be virtually impossible as there is a never-ending stream of cars between Mittenwald and Garmisch. Then again, there are several parking next to the highway today.
