The story behind the image
Snow and ice are ubiquitous in Helsinki, Finland, during the winter. The big harbour can freeze all over, and just the main route for the big ships will be kept free by ice breakers. This was an unusual sight for us, and an amazing experience when exploring the surroundings of Helsinki.
On one extremely cold morning we took the passenger ferry to Suomenlinna, a former fortress island. The ferry made its way towards the island, and my photo shows the view when approaching the landing pier on the island.
The military use of the fortress ended in 1973. Today, the island is a tourist magnet that attracts close to a million people every year. It is home to 850 people who still live and work on the island.
