The story behind the image

German travel magazine GEO Saison ran an article in their May 1998 issue featuring the ’10 most beautiful Italian villages’, and Bagolino was one of them. And rightfully so. The secluded and peaceful village is situated north-west of the Lago d’Idro, and it’s a jewel that – back in 2000 when we stayed for a night in the village – did not see a lot of tourism. This is probably related to the fact that one has to use steep, narrow roads to get there.

When we woke up in our hotel, the Tre Valli (Via S. Rocco, 56), I was stunned to see a tiny church perched on a steep rock just, apparently surrounded just by the woods. I used a tele lens to capture this aewsome view, deliberatley placing the church in the lower right corner to provide some room for a headline and some copy.

The curch was first menitoned in 1598, but today the buildings seem to be in a bad condition. Its interior is okay, though, and of course it still looks as nice from the distance as it did back in 2000.

The tourist office of Bagolino has the full story of the historic church.

Bagolino? Well worth a visit even if it is a bit difficult to get to!
