The story behind the image
Winter in Kiel, Germany, could get quite cold – sometimes so cold that the Kieler Förde (the arm of the Baltic Sea that leads into the city of Kiel) could freeze all over.
But in 1975 I had turned into a teenager, and I did not care about the cold weather. I loved it, as it enabled my friends and me to put our sleds to good use on a small hill in the village.
This is the view I grew up with, shot during Christmas 1975 from our appartment in the first floor of the Tilsiter Weg 2A in Altenholz-Stift near Kiel.
Of course, this photo is mediocre from a technical viewpoint. Not only was it a dull day, the colors of the print have faded over time. It’s not even very sharp. And the surface is covered by an annoying silk raster pattern which made scanning and editing difficult.
But – I love the memories unlocked by the photo. And this is what counts for me.
🙂
