The story behind the image
Lake Garda! It’s just a stone throw away from Munich in Germany (well, four hours by car), and makes you feel as if you enter a different world in the Alpine region of Northern Italy. That’s why it used to be one of our favorite destinations for weekend getaways.
In 2001 we stayed for a couple of days in Riva del Garda at the northern end of the lake, and we explored the surroundings, including a side trip to the Lago di Tenno, a small lake situated about 10 km north of Riva. Its key feature is its color that can only be described as “a warm turquoise”. The view blew me away.
I had loaded a new color negative film into my SLR, and I still remember that the packaging promised better colors than ever (or something like that). Oh boy! Little did I know that the colors would turn out very saturated and with harsh contrasts. The prints from the lab looked quite artificial.
Still I scanned the original negative in 2022 again and was able to correct the absurd colors. Now the digital image looks as I remember the scenic view. The colors still look weird, but that’s how the lake (can) look.
