The story behind the image
In 2001, Petra and I spent a long weekend in London, UK, to explore the city and do some Christmas shopping. I brought my tiny Kodak DC 4800 Zoom Digital camera which I had purchased earlier in the year. One afternoon we took a long walk along the Thames river. On London Bridge, I took this beautiful view along the river with its iconic Tower Bridge and the HMS Belfast which is a museum of the Royal Navy today.
Back then I was amazed by the quality of the digital shot, and you could see the result right away! Don’t laugh! Please remember that the most common photo medium was film back then. Depending on film type and scanner used, a 35 mm slide was good for prints of up to 40 x 60 cm. Of course, this is impossible from a 3.1 Megapixel digital shot like this. But two decades ago, I was blown away. And even today, I still like it.
By the way, this shot would be impossible today. First, the modern building on the right is now partly obstructed by a group of office buildings. Second, in the distance behind the middle of the Tower Bridge, a high rise has been erected which irritates the view as it seems to be about twice as tall as the existing high rise.
