The story behind the image
The island of Sardinia features a network of train lines that connects the important twons and cities. One of the train lines is the Trenino Verde, literally the Small Green Train. Not only carry the wagons a green paint, but the lines pass the beautiful and amazingly green interior of the island. That’s why it is also known as the Linee Touristiche (Tourist Line). The trains and tracks are old, and the regular service had to be cancelled in the 1990s.
However, seasonal operations for tourists were continued during the summer. Two de-railings in 2014 revealed the bad condition of the tracks. But money has been tight, and it has become increasingly difficult to maintain the network without requires serious investments. As a consequence, the service has been reduced further.
