The story behind the image
Here’s a beautiful image shot from the Via Panoramica near Porto Santo Stefano in Italy. It’s just one more reason why you should consider the drive on the truly scenic route. It’s pretty close to the city and can be reached by car in just a few minutes. On this day, motor boats and yachts were rushing by, probably heading for (or coming from) the harbour of Porto Santo Stefano.
But be cautious: The Via Panoramica circles the peninsula, and it’s really tempting to take the full circle from Porto Santo Stefano to Porto Ercole. We did it and found out (much to our surprise, I have to admit) that one part was still a gravel road, and a bad one. (It starts here going east.) While it seems to be just a short distance – about 4 kilometers – it may wreck your nerves (and your car!) So, please do yourself a favor and turn around when the dirt road begins. I know, it’s not cool to drive all the way back to Porto Santo Stefano, but it really makes sense. Of course, if you’ve got a sturdy 4×4, it should not be a problem to use the gravel road.
