The story behind the image
1951 was a good year for the small Schweim family. They had moved back to Kiel in 1949, the economy was soaring, and the family business was doing well.
This photo from the family archive shows my grandmother Edith with my mother Inga (9, left) and Editha (10) during an excursion to the woods near Schönwalde am Bungsberg.
I like this photo not just for its positive mood but also for some interesing details.
- My mother seems to carry an american football. I am not aware of a specific family link to this unusual sport – unusual at least in 1950s Germany –, so this is quite a surprise.
- My aunt wears a jacket with a personalized badge that shows her initials (“ES”, for Editha Schweim). My mother owned a similar jacket with her initials but apparently it was already too warm for her to wear for the photo.
- The kids wear the same dresses, probably sewn by my grandmother. This habit should end soon.
A lovely image.
