The story behind the image

In December 2004, shortly before Christmas, we had visited my mother for the last time in her hometown in Kiel, Germany. We also walked from our hotel through the old town center of Kiel – or rather what has remained from the war. The streets had been decorated with trees and lights for the festive season.

My image shows the Dänische Straße which leads up to Alter Markt with the majestic St. Nikolai church. The longer exposure created a nice motion blur of a cyclist who drove by.

It’s interesting to see how the street has developed over time. Here is an image dated June 1965 by the great Friedrich Magnussen (1914-1987) who had worked as a press photographer in Kiel for most of his lifetime. Looking at recent images, I see that the Hotel Erkenhof has apparently been sold and renamed to Hotel am Kieler Schloß by Premiere Classe.
