The story behind the image
When visiting Ticino, the small Italian speaking part of Switzerland, you will most likely also visit Lago Maggiore, and it’s a good choice. Split between Switzerland (in the north) and Italy (in the south), it carries the best of those two cultures: Swiss accuracy combined with Italian lifestyle and language.
We had some time to explore both sides of the border, and one day we drove all the way up to the mountain village of Palagnedra which is still situated in Switzerland. We took the Via Cantonale for the 18 kilometers from Ascona. It’s a curvy road that leads along a stunning canyon until you reach the Lago di Palagnedra, a reservoir close to the village. Then the road goes in serpentines up to the center of the village.
A bit outside is its historical church with its quiet, beautiful graveyard. Here – deep in the mountains and far away from the busy cities – we felt a tremendous relaxation and peace.
A lovely experience.
