The story behind the image
In December 2004, shortly before Christmas, we had visited my mother for the last time in her hometown in Kiel, Germany. We stayed at the Steigenberger Conti Hansa Hotel in a room with a fantastic view across the Kleiner Kiel – the lake that surrounds the historic city center of Kiel.
I like this shot because it shows the clarity of the air on that day. It was cold but clear. And this clarity reflected also the relationship with my mother. Now, some of the misunderstandings between us had been cleared.
What’s more, this view used to be rather unique and you could not get easily capture this angle for many years as you had to be a guest of the hotel. Of course, today you might just use a drone to get a similar shot.
