The story behind the image

Hamburg has so many attractions that it’s difficult to see them all even in two days. Fortunately, some of them are pretty close to each other. Take the Landungsbrücken, for example. In the 19th and 20th century, countless German emigrants to the United States, Canada, or Brazil boarded their ships here.

However, right next to the Landungsbrücken, and really just a two minute walk away, the St. Pauli Elbtunnel (to locals known as the Old Elbe Tunnel) can be visited, free of charge. Simply take the elevator to the lower level and continue your visit under the Elbe. In the past, it was an essential connection for the dock workers to get to work, and back. (More here.)

In this photo, I like the symmetry and harsh contrast between the illuminated tile section and the rather dark front. Of course, inspecting the high resolution image reveals a lot of noise, but that’s to be expected when shooting in rather dark environments. (And yes, I’m still annoyed that I did not bring a decent camera.)
