The story behind the image

There’s something magical about the sea. Whereever in the world I visited the shores, it usually was a positive and re-balancing experience. I think this is because of the sheer size of the sea. It makes you acknowledge that man is pretty small when compared to this view. That’s why I love to travel to the seaside.

Our 2019 trip brought us to Bansin, a village in the North-East of Germany, situated at the Baltic Sea on the island of Usedom. It is a tourist village but it’s not too busy which makes it very special. You get all the amenities of a real tourist destination without the frenzy of the masses.

I took this photo from the Bansin pier looking west. The sunset had taken place a couple of minutes before, and now the ‘Blue Hour’ had started the magical transformation of the lights. The hills on the left were throwing dark shadows to the beach, adding a sharp contrast to the sea that began to reflect the beautiful colors of the sky. The long exposure of 0.5 sec gently blurred the tiny waves. And the contemporary 16:9 crop appeals to smartphone users.

Lovely.
