The story behind the image
We explored the south west of the island of Mallorca and found a generally attractive region. There are rather quiet villages like Sant Elm, glitzy yacht harbours like Port Andratx, secluded bays like Camp del Mar, and there are very few villages that I call ‘victims of the 70s’. Like Santa Ponça.
How on Earth could it happen that such a beautiful spot could get flooded by concrete towers, one bigger than the other? I know, I know. It was considered modern back in the 60s and 70s, and we have some terrible examples in Northern Germany, too. Still, it makes me sad to see these buildings.
Despite this, I do like the image. The yachts contrast well with the high rises in the back, not just visually but also mentally: The huge hotels for the masses, and the yachts for the rich. (But that’s the way it is, I guess.)
