The story behind the image
Our first days couple of days in South Africa and the Kruger National Park were cloudy and rainy, and the rain could sometimes be heavy. But we were excited to be in the park and did not really mind the bad weather. Both the animals in the park and the farmers in the surroundings had been waiting and hoping for this rain as the dry soils and the vegetation needed the water.
Now we were driving, slowly and always cautious, along the main road and explored some of the rather solid side roads. Here, we spotted a giraffe, but the view was blocked by the trees and scrub. Then the giraffe passed a location were its long neck and head could be seen perfectly, and I took this image.
I am sharing this image to help you manage your expectations when traveling to South Africa during high season. Not every day will be picture perfect, and you may encounter some really bad days. Should that happen to you (like it did to us), try to make the best from it. You may still be able to shoot some stunning images on your journey through the park.
