The story behind the image
Near Dumfries you will find New Abbey, a small village that is home to Sweetheart Abbey, the beautiful ruins of a church from the 13th century. Its name is linked to the founder of the abbey who kept the embalmed heart of her husband as a “sweet, silent companion” for the last years of her life.
After our visit we explored the village which did not take very long. We found the Criffel Inn B&B, a small family-run hotel located centrally at 2 The Square and within walking distance to the Sweetheart Abbey site. It not just looked cozy but had also been positively reviewed in our guidebook, and we would have loved to stay there for a delicious dinner and a peaceful night but it did not fit our plans for that day.
Sadly, this B&B and pub has been permanently closed now and has been converted into a private dwelling.
