The story behind the image

This historic postcard sent in September 1908 shows the beautiful lake Dieksee in Gremsmühlen in Germany. Six men and two girls sit in a rowing boat near a tiny pier and the small beach of the town. One of the men seems to be the captain as he looks older and wears a captain’s hat. There are neither visible buildings nor other boats. Everyone in the group looks towards the camera, so it is most likely a staged photo.

This photo shows the early and innocent beginnings of tourism in and around Malente-Gremsmühlen. People from the bigger German cities – Hamburg, Hannover, Berlin – wanted to escape the hectic, noise, dirt, and pollution, they had at home and experience tranquility in nature. It had become more affordable to travel, and the area around Malente and Gremsmühlen offered what they tourists were looking for. People had been increasingly visiting the area over the past decade and reported home the beauty they had found. Which attracted further visitors and guests. If you want, this is a real success story.

I like the image because it really focuses on the boat and the unspoilt nature surrounding it.
