The story behind the image
Here’s another nice image by photo pioneer Albert Giesler. It shows a path in the forest surrounding the Ugleisee (Ukleisee) near Eutin in Germany. In the back you can see the lake, and there is a man in a rowing boat. The print is dated 1893 in the lower right corner and is in superb condition, compared to other prints of that period.
Early in his career he did a series showing beautiful spots in the county of Ostholstein. These were mounted on large (about 10 x 15 cm) cardboards that carried his mark and the headline “Ost-Holstein”. These were sold as souvenirs to tourists as well as marketing material for businesses.
This photo, by the way, must have used a long (or at least longish) exposure time because the man in the boat is just blurred.
