The story behind the image
For my trip to Mexico City I brought my trusted Canon AE-1 Program with several slide films. Fortunately, the meeting schedule would provide plenty of opportunities to explore the city.
When I first stepped out of my hotel in the morning, I was overwhelmed by the traffic. It was dominated by green Volkswagen Beetles that were the majority of taxis back in 2003.
But the era of the bright green VW Beetles has come to an end in 2012 as the government of the city has not prolonged the taxi licences for two-door cars. This may have a positive impact on the environment (in terms of exhaust fumes and noice levels) and also improve the security of the passengers. The move has also affected prices, because modern four-door sedan cars are more expensive.
And most certainly, one of the true icons of the city – the green VW Beetle taxi – will be missed. At least by the tourists.
