The story behind the image
For tourists, it can be difficult to find non-touristic spots in a city which is flooded by tourists every single day of the year. When going out for lunch or dinner we try to avoid obvious tourists traps and pick smaller restaurants that promise authentic hospitality.
The osteria Il Pizzaiuolo in Florence, Italy, is such a place. Situated off the city center next to the Mercato di Sant’Ambrogio, it is already off the beaten tourist track already, and thanks to its narrow, historic entrance door it can be easily overlooked. In former times the restaurant catered for the merchants and workers of the market as well as the people who lived in the quarter. Today, some tourists find their way, too, but when we stopped by, there were mostly local guests. The food was excellent, and the value for money was much higher than in the city center.
We loved the fact that the restaurant could preserve its charms and withstand the trend towards cool, modern furniture. Once you pass the entrance door you will find yourself in an authentic Italian restaurant with a unique culinary experience and very friendly staff.
By the way, this is a perfect match for the nearby market which is the ‘city variant’ of the traditional moving markets that are typical for smaller towns across the entire country. These are not only nice to look at (for tourists) but essential for supplying goods to those who cannot drive to visit far away outlet centers and supermarkets. The market is definitely worth a visit. It’s an experience of its own. (But be early, as most merchants pack up at noon.)
