The story behind the image
Munster in Alsace, France, is known to be the “City of Storks” as the large birds not only stop by in the city on their way between northern Europe and Africa but they stay. Every year they build nests, take care of their offspring – and return in the next year. Which is extremely rare in central Europe.
In 2001, we were quite lucky to see a couple of storks, and I had my tele lens ready for shots, but the sky was just dull and grey, and so I did just some half-hearted shots. You know, back in the days of film you wouldn’t pull through multiple images just to capture a stork nest against a dull grey sky.
But it’s a nice memory, because it was a really rare sight. At least to us. 🙂 When looking up the data for this image I also checked the location on Google Maps. As of July 2018, the building was still present, but when the Google team captured their streetview image, there were neither nest nor storks to be seen.
