The story behind the image
I’ve been living in Southern Germany for almost three decades by now – but my roots remain in Northern Germany. In 2023 we visited the area where many ancesters were coming from: Ostholstein.
I was looking to capture some typical landscape photos of the area, and I found this beautiful shot just outside of Grömitz, above the yacht harbour. What makes this image so remarkable is the complete absence of man made object. There are no cars, lorries, or bulldogs, no road signs, no lamps, no power or telephone posts, no windpower stations or solar panels, and no buildings. Just a plain wheat field, a few trees separating the fields, and the blue sky with puffy clouds. This could easily been shot a century ago, or maybe two.
Guess what? It was surprisingly difficult to find this spot. In most images, there’s something, somewhere, that hints towards the presence of mankind.
Yes, it’s a simple image, and that was exactly my intention.
