The story behind the image

A while ago I shared this awesome 1896 print and this postcard, both by German photo pioneer Albert Giesler, both showing the restaurant at the promenade near the Voss House in his hometown Eutin. Now I have found a colour image of that place, also shot by Giesler.

Sent in September 1908, it has probably been shot about ten years after the other two images. It is remarkable that it is a rastered colour print – colour photography had yet to be invented. While the back mentions: “Phot. v. Alb. Giesler, Hofphotograph, Eutin” it looks just upon first glance like a photo. A second look reveals that the photo was just the foundation for an elaborate painting.

Despite not being a photo, I like to see the mix of photography and painting. The image gives us an impression how the location must have looked in 1908.
