The story behind the image
In 2003, we had booked our first trip to El Gouna in Egypt. Once checked-in, we were greeted with THIS amazing view. Sure, we had seen the photos in the catalogue, but we were simply stunned to see it for real. I had brought my Canon AE-1 Program and captured the scenery. Even today, two decades later this image is still breathtaking.
Now, there’s something you need to know about El Gouna. It’s not a historic village turned into a tourist town, but has been completely built from scratch since 1990. A visonary investor purchased the stretch of land at the Red Sea and created the perfect spot for tourists. It has everything: 5-star hotels with wonderful beaches, a yacht harbour, a town center with several luxury shops. And it is a gated community, i.e. you have to pass a guard station that controls access to the property. This feels a bit weird at first, but once you’re in El Gouna you can safely enjoy your vacation.
