The story behind the image

The Big Mama dune belongs to the Sossusvlei which is part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park in Nambia. You get to it after driving a rather straight tarred road from the only park entry for about 70 kilometers, then changing to a shuttle service and drive another 3 kilometers, and finally walk to the foot of the dune, or even to its top!

When we did this in 2006, a lady was walking about 200 meters in front of us on top of the dune. The upward hike was exhausting (for us) but she seemed to have no issues at all and was much faster. The gap was getting larger and larger. So large in fact that I could capture this moment on file.

I love the clear lines and reduced color set. What’s more, the single person acts as a scale to visualize the giant size of the dune.

Once we got to the top, we had a lot of fun, too. We were not just enjoying the silence of the place, but also ran down the sides and watched the traces we left in the soft sand.

If you have a chance to visit the area, don’t miss out the Big Mama dune.
