The story behind the image

A while ago I shared a 1950s image of the beach restaurant Arche Noah in St. Peter Ording at the German part of the North Sea. Here’s an image from our 2007 trip to the place, showing the stilted buildings on the beach (public bathrooms and showers on the left, the Arche Noah restaurant in the middle, and the lifeguard station) and the beach pier.

The sun was about to set, and the wind was blowing relentlessly and really, really cold across the beach. I was trembling, and we were looking forward to our dinner in our hotel. So I couldn’t possibly wait for the sunset to happen.

Yet, the pale light of the sun illuminated the beach and the stilted buildings quite nicely. I opted for a panoramic crop to add some drama. As you can guess, I like the almost monochromatic look and the reflections of the sunlight on the water.
