The story behind the image
Before touring Alsace I had never heard of the town Ribeauvillé. But we stopped here in the afternoon and walked around its beautiful historic town center. The city walls were established in the 13th century, and some some parts do still exist.
Today, the town is best known for the surrounding vineyards, and it is a good place to enjoy tasty food with matching local wines.
At the corner of the building Grand Rue 28 we found the historic wooden sculpture Le Pfiffer de l’an 1300 (the piper of the year 1300.) It is said that back then the instrument of the piper was broken, but a Mr. von Rappoltstein had donated some money to the piper. To thank him for his generosity, the Brotherhood of Pipers decided to submit to his rule. The statue as well as the annual Pfifferdaj (the piper’s festival, the largest and oldest folk festival in Alsace) are reminders of this today.
I shot this photo in 2001 with my (then) brand new Kodak DC4800 Zoom Digital camera. The size of the image is tiny by todays standards, but the quality is excellent and suitable for travel guides (who often need just stamp sized images.)
