The story behind the image

In the summer of 2023, the Dutch tall ship Loth Loriën offered short trips on the Baltic Sea, departing from Grömitz. These two-hour trips are perfect for those who just want to experience sailing as it used to be. (And yes, it’s a beautiful experience, especially when the weather conditions allow for shutting off the engine and just move by the power of the wind.)

In my image, the ship returns from a late afternoon trip. It was illuminated by the already deep sun which was casting long shadows onto the beach. The beach itself was (for a moment) empty and I kept the sea pier out of the frame.

The result: a simple, yet very effective sailing image that consists of just five components: grass, sand, water, sky – and the ship. Very nice.
