The story behind the image

Not far from Dublin – about a 45 minute drive – we found the medieval remains of Bective Abbey in Ballina in County Meath. Established in 1147, it served initially as a ‘daughter house’ of Mellifont Abbey before it got confiscated during the Dissolution of the Monasteries about four centuries later. It followed a mixed history that ended (for now) with the purchase of the site and real estate by the Irish state in 2012.

You may have seen the location already as it was used in 1994 for shooting the movie Braveheart starring Mel Gibson.
