The story behind the image

Here’s an exciting image showing the Russian tall ship Mir as it has been moored to the Ostseekai in Kiel, Germany, during the biggest sailing event in the world, the Kiel Week.

The image is exciting because not only does it show the ship we would use later that day for a mini-cruise to the Baltic Sea (and back), but it shows the former architecture of the Ostseekai cruise terminal. It looks much smaller and more sober than the building that occupies the space today.

But there’s more to the image: Because it had been Kiel Week, even more tall ships had been visiting the harbour of Kiel – visible in the background of the image. Usually, the harbour is not cramped with tall ships, but with modern cruise liners.

Well, well. Change is everywhere, I guess.
