The story behind the image
The iconic touristic attraction of Stonehaven in Scotland is Dunnottar Castle, located about two miles south of the village. It is a fantastic (read: magnificient, must-see) castle ruin sitting upon a large rock high above the North Sea.
Parts of Dunnottar Castle date back to the 13th century, but it is likely that the rock had been occupied even before as its location made it very difficult to be conquered. Today, you can visit the castle interiors (at a hefty entrance fee) after a short, steep walk from the car park.
Interesting fact: In 1990, parts of the movie Hamlet, starring Mel Gibson and Glenn Close, were filmed here.
