The story behind the image

I always get suspicious if the name of a product already suggests an overpromise. For example, the zoo in Hannover, Germany, calls itself The Adventure Zoo. How can a zoo be a real adventure? Basically, you get to see countless animals behind bars. (Okay, most zoos try to get away without bars.)

So, I was more than sceptical when we decided to visit the zoo in Hannover this summer.

Can you imagine my surprise when I realized that this zoo has been designed to not just present the animals in spacious cherishes, but puts them into themed worlds that match their natural habitats. And not just the animals – the visitors get to enjoy these beautifully designed themes as well.

For example, the polar bear cherish is part of the ‘Yukon World’. The designers created a lost place in Alaska, complete with rocks, cranes, shacks, and a giant ship wreck (which is also home of the penguins.) Visitors can walk into the wreck and enjoy the polar bears and the penguins from above and below the surface of the water.

I had not expected this awesome experience and stood there admiring the polar bear (who had good fun with a baseball cap he had found) as he dived through the huge basin.

The other themes are stunning as well. You can even take a free boat excursion through the zoo. It takes just a few minutes, but it is similar to the real experience in Africa.

I had not seen anything like this before and have to admit that the Hannover Zoo is an Adventure Zoo. When in Hannover, do not miss it!
