The story behind the image
When we visited Glasgow in Scotland, the big city at the Scottish west coast, we also explored the large harbour at the river Clyde. We found the historic tall ship S. V. Glenlee tied at Yorkhill Quay. Its long history with countless twists is superbly explained on its homepage and also on Wikipedia.
The ship contained a maritime museum in 2005, focusing on the ship’s maritime heritage but also that of Glasgow and the river Clyde.
On my image, the ship does not look very impressive. This is certainly related to the many handrails that prevented a full view of the entire ship. The dark color of the body did not help either.
The good news, however, is that the ship has now found a new home, just around the corner. In the 18 years that have passed since we were in Glasgow, the entire Quay has been remodeled. A new building has been erected, replacing the former small huts that can still be seen in my picture. The building is home to the Riverside Museum that features high tech exhibitions.
Not only can the ship be seen in its full beauty now (ideally from Govan Pier on the other side of the river) but the ship has gotten a fresh new paint in grey and red.
