The story behind the image
Tuscany keeps on being a very popular destination for tourists from all over the world, and it’s easy to see why: Where else do you get so much culture, history, and unspoilt landscapes, in such a confined space?
Siena is one of these stunning places and as Italian as it can get. You’ll get many small and narrow streets, historic houses, tasty wines, and excellent food.. But it is best known for the Palio di Siena, a horse race where riders from each town quarter (or Contrada) compete against each other – on the Piazza del Campo right in the town center. It’s a genuine competition that is not just performed for the tourists. A lot of passion goes into the training, the preparation, and the actual races.
I took this photo 23 years ago. It shows the Piazza del Campo around noon. Countless people had sat down for their lunch break or just to take a rest and enjoy the unique mood of the large Piazza.
I think this is a timeless image. Today, people will still sit down for the lunch break as they did back then. And I like this thought.
