The story behind the image

Here’s yet another photo from our trip to Switzerland in 2004. It’s the historic Zytgloggeturm (Timebelltower) in Berne, Switzerland, seen from the Kramgasse in the evening during the blue hour.

The tower is very old – reconstructed in 1405 already when it got its first clock – and used to chime hourly. In 1530 the cuboid tower received its towering shape and got a new clock. Starting in the 18th century, decrees and ordinances were posted in the gateway. A public ruler made it possible for everyone to check the dimensions of goods.

I did not bring a tripod for this evening but used the Simson spring as a makeshift tripod along with the self exposure timer and a longish exposure. Three advantages from this: The camera stood rock solid, I did not have to carry the additional weight from the tripod, and cars had to drive around me if they did not want to hit the spring. 😉

I think it’s a beautiful image that gets the peaceful mood of the city well across. I reduced the yellow stain from the street lights just a bit, but that’s about it in terms of editing.

Very nice.
