MARCH 2004 – The Huguenot Memorial Monument in Franschoek, South Africa, late in the afternoon of a sunny day. It honors the first Hugenot settlers who immigrated to South Africa in the 17th and 18th century. Photo © Mark Zanzig/zanzig.com
The story behind the image
Franschoek in South Africa is best known for its large vineyards that produce tasty wines enjoyed all over the world. But in the surroundings you’ll find good spots for hiking and climbing, too. Driving all the way up to the Franschoek Pass you’ll have stunning views across the valley.
Directly in the town you will find the Huguenot Memorial Monument that honors the first Hugenot settlers who immigrated to South Africa in the 17th and 18th century.
I like the symmetry in this photo, and the soft afternoon light with its long shadows.
