The story behind the image
In August 1999 a total eclipse of the sun was taking place over Bavaria, Germany. I was at the time in Unterhaching and celebrated the event – which had been a topic for the media for quite a while IIRC – on the parking lot in front of the office. We had received bespoke cardboard “glasses” to protect the eyes from looking directly into the sunlight. These were even showing the date of the event!
The moment was quite impressive, and I could understand how people of the past might have been scared by it. But it was over all too quickly, and everyone was returning to work.
I’m happy to have found this image in the archive as it re-activated the memories of a really good time, exactly 24 years ago.
