The story behind the image
I remember the time in British Columbia in 2002 as one of the best periods in my life. I had a decent career going on and could afford exploring places like Canada, the United States, or South Africa. And from our first trip to Canada, I remember Tofino to be the highlight. Back then I wrote on (my old site) zanzig.com:
“Dreams? Well, if I could, I would immediately go to British Columbia, acquire a nice B&B with access to the Pacific Ocean or to a lake. Then I would bring in guests with my own floatplane. Unfortunately, this will remain a dream for some time.”
Mark Zanzig, 2003
Over the years, it did not get easier to follow this dream, and so it has never materialized (and probably won’t.)
Yet I remember Tofino as a perfect place for living. A small, peaceful, and friendly community that is far away from the noise of the big city, situated within an awesome landscape (and seascape) – and just an hour or so away from Vancouver that offers all amenities. My dream.
I took this image from the co-pilot seat of a DHC-2 Beaver floatplane while approaching Tofino after a stunning flight across Clayoquot Sound. The plane was operated by Tofino Air who offer scheduled flights from Tofino to Vancouver downtown and several other destinations, as well as charter tours and scenic flights.
