The story behind the image
The single major event in June 2006 was (in Germany) the soccer world championship. You simply could not escape this event. And I was lucky enough to visit a soccer match of the German team!
So, on 20th June I was joined by a friend and colleague of mine. We had received VIP tickets for the match Ecuador vs. Germany – in Berlin. “VIP tickets” were seats with an excellent view and some nice food during the halftime break. Wow.
We turned this into a mini event for us and flew in early that day and took our time to visit Berlin. I had been to Berlin before, but never long enough to really get acquainted with the city (and this trip would make no difference, sadly.) But heck, we hopped on a tour bus and enjoyed the drive through the city. The match would kick off at 4 pm, so we had plenty of time.
One stop brought us to the Brandenburger Tor right in the heart of the city. I wanted a detailed shot of the Quadriga resting on top of the monument, and I got what I wanted. I even like the clouds in the background as these make the image more useful for different topics.
P.S.: Germany won that match 3:0 and closed the group phase of the tournament as winner of group A. This created even more buzz for the German team, but the dream of winning the championship in country did not come true in the end. Looking back, I still think it’s fair to say that June/July 2006 had been an awesome time in Germany.
