The story behind the image
The town of Silves is situated in Portugal’s most southern region, the Algarve which is best known as a destination for a beach vacation. However, unlike most towns, Silves is not located at the coast but some 15 km away in the hills. It has several historic attractions, among them a spectacular fortress and the cathedral Sé Catedral de Silves.
I have very fond memories of Silves, by the way, as I shot some remarkable portraits of my girlfriend here on an extremely hot day in 1988. At the coast, the heat was unbearable, and in Silves it was still hot (but bearable), so we experienced it as almost refreshing.
For the re-visit in 1995 I brought better equipment and more films. Here, I captured the belltower of the cathedral from the south, at R. da Porta do Sol. I especially like the dominance of the white and light yellow walls that contrast well with the deep blue sky. The absence of plants (or any green, really) adds to the attractiveness.
