The story behind the image

Strasbourg has a long history, but it discovered boat trips for tourists rather late – in 1937. That’s when the Independent Port of Strasbourg acquired the Paris, one of the boats from the International Exhibition of Paris. The first routes offered just trips to the basins of the Port du Rhin, exploring the infrastructure and industries of the port. Over time, the fleet expanded, and passenger figures rose from 10,000 in 1937 to 168,000 per year in the late 1970s.

When we visited the charming city in 2001, I found their unique ticket office on the Ill, opposite the Quai des Bateliers near the Palais Rohan. It rested on a retired tug boat, presumably from the Port of Strasbourg. We could not book a tour because of high waters, but I took a photo of the unusual ticket office.

At the time of writing, the ticket office still exists but the ticketsellers have been replaced by machines. 😦
